May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! As your dermatology provider, The Clinic is always eager to raise awareness about skin cancer and the importance of lowering your skin cancer risk by recommending proven precautions such as daily sunscreen application, wearing hats and avoiding the sun at peak hours. All of these actions can help you avoid sun damage and dramatically lower your risk for skin cancer.

Here’s what you may not know about skin cancer prevention:

All sunscreens are NOT equal.
First of all, ANY sunscreen is better than NO sunscreen. That said, we carry Obagi® skin care, the #1 physician-dispensed skin care system. Obagi sunscreens are specially formulated for all skin types, whether your skin is prone to blemishes and oiliness or dryness and wrinkles. Obagi also features products that help correct hyperpigmentation and improve visible signs of skin aging. With the right products, you can protect and enhance your skin’s appearance at the same time. There’s no need to sacrifice your appearance in the name of skin cancer prevention.

Skin cancer prevention is a daily thing.
Make skin cancer screenings a routine part of your year. In addition to annual screenings, we recommend applying sunscreen daily, 365 days a year. We may all slather on sunscreen before going to the pool or beach, but are we wearing sunscreen every day of the year? Do we apply it as part of our morning routine? What we hear from many of our patients is that they don’t like to apply sunscreen every day because it’s greasy and leaves an unattractive white residue on their skin. This is when we inform them that we carry Obagi sunscreens, which feature amazing formulas designed to enhance the look and feel of all skin types! Need a mattifying formula because your skin is oily? We have that! Hoping to reduce signs of aging? We’ve got a sunscreen for that, too! Eager to blur skin imperfections? What about matching your skin tone? We’ve got formulations designed for both warm and cool undertones. The bottom line is you have no excuse for not wearing sunscreen every day, and we can help you find the perfect sunscreen during your next visit!

Keep in mind the sun doesn’t discriminate between beach days and cloudy days at home. While you are certainly more at risk for sun exposure when you are outside, the sun creeps in through windows and during your errands, so it’s important to keep your skin protected all the time.
